Reading Break 2012: Take a 'Staycation' with @SFUVan

So, you’re not going to the Bahamas for reading break. Hey, neither are we, so we’ve made a guide for your faux getaway—without the jet lag.

Get some sun

Vancouverites have had things pretty good lately. If the sunshine comes back next week, try heading to Stanley Park. The #19 bus goes directly there, via Hastings or Pender St.

Even if the sun’s not shining, Yaletown will be. This Friday and Saturday (Feb. 10-11) is Illuminate Yaletown, an annual event that transforms the neighbourhood into an outdoor light art exhibit.

Have a drink (the healthy kind)

The snow is gone, so put down the hot chocolate and grab something fresh. The Juice Truck specializes in cold pressed juices and smoothies. It won’t be served in a coconut, but it’s the next best thing. Go visit them at Abbott & Water St.

Try something new

The Window Community Art Shop has recently opened in the neighbourhood. It’s a non-profit shop featuring local designers and crafters. Work on your own crafting skills at one of their sewing classes.

Read a good book

It’s called Reading Break for a reason. Did you think you could get away without cracking a book open?

Take a break from academia and visit MacLeod’s Books on the corner of Richards and Pender. This place is a treasure trove of good reads. The stacks of books will make you think you’re in Paris at Shakespeare and Company.

Getting on top of your course work is not a bad idea either. Who knows, you might even have the library to yourself.

Get active

Rain or shine, why not cross the Grouse Grind off your bucket list?

If you’d rather stay adventurous without leaving your seat, visit the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (it’s about more than just mountains).

Party a little bit

It’s not exactly ‘Spring Break,’ but you can still celebrate before heading back to class. On Friday the 17th, party like an FCAT student at FCAT Rewired. And be sure to check out What's on this Week @SFUVan for other cool events taking place downtown.
